A recent rush into financial services by Chinese Internet firms took a new twist last week when China Unicom (HKEx: 762; NYSE: CHU), the nation’s second biggest wireless carrier, announced it will move into the space with the establishment of a new joint venture. Unicom joins China’s major Internet companies and a wide range of other firms in launching such joint ventures, with Alibaba, Tencent (HKEx: 700) and Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) all announcing similar tie-ups this year. This week will go down in the history books as the week when China finally entered the high-speed telecoms era with its granting of 4G licenses after years of waiting. But China still has the dubious distinction as one of the world’s few markets where Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) wildly popular iPhone isn’t available to more than half of the country’s 1 billion mobile subscribers. That looks set to finally change soon, with media reporting that China’s dominant carrier China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) has finally signed an iPhone deal with Apple. Read Full Post…
I really would like to compliment Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) from time to time for its China strategy, since I personally have no objections with the world’s largest software maker in general. But it’s often difficult to find anything positive to say about Microsoft’s strange decisions in China, and that’s certainly the case with the latest news about its choice of new local business partner for its Skype instant messaging service. Microsoft made headlines earlier this month when it dissolved a longstanding China tie-up for Skype without naming a new partner for the service; now it has formally chosen new partners in 2 stodgy state-run enterprises, Guangming Daily and Founder Group. Beijing is showing that Washington isn’t the only one that can play games over national security concerns, with word that networking equipment giant Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) is loosing big business in China due to revelations about US spying. Frankly speaking, this latest development in the networking equipment Cold War between Beijing and Washington doesn’t surprise me too much, and some might even say that China’s national security concerns are justified. But no matter what you think, it seems likely that Cisco’s new China freeze is at least partly and quite possibly completely in response to similar moves by Washington against Chinese networking equipment giants Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063). We’re rapidly running out of days in October for 2 major telecoms developments that many were expecting this month, namely the awarding of new licenses for 4G wireless service and for new telecoms service providers known as virtual network operators (VNOs). There are still 10 days left in the month, so it’s possible that one or both could still happen. But the usual delays could mean we may not see any major announcements for a little while longer. Meantime, media are reporting some new information on a timetable for the VNO roll-out; and in another major development that could shake up the status quo, media are also saying that leading wireless telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) could soon get a license to offer fixed-line telecoms services.
