WEIBO TALK: Lenovo Watches Super Bowl, Weibo Chastises WeChat

Lenovo team enjoys the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl may be the most watched TV program in the US, but it’s still relatively unknown in China due to the lack of popularity of American football. But the sport gained at least a few Chinese fans with its latest airing, as top executives from the likes of PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) and online video firm LeTV (Shenzhen: 300104) tuned in to watch this year’s match-up that saw the New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks.

Meantime, an executive from the struggling Sina Weibo (Nasdaq: WB) was busy criticizing rival Tencent (HKEx: 700) for the latter’s freeze-out of several major Internet firms from its hugely popular WeChat instant messaging platform. Finally, we’ll end this week’s round-up of tech executive chatter with buzz that hints a former online literature pioneer may be preparing to emerge from a forced retirement, as he returns after a tough business battle of the sort that’s quite common in China. INTERNET: Internet Sees Messaging Surge, Microblog Retreat

Bottom line: China’s overall Internet growth will continue to slow as the market starts to become saturated, with messaging and other mobile services continuing to steal share from microblogging and video operators.

Microblogging decline bites Weibo

A newly released annual government report on China’s Internet is full of good news for the online business community, with most sectors posting double-digit growth as overall penetration neared the 50 percent mark. But a few sectors stood out as distinctive losers in the report from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), led by the microblogging space that saw a sharp decline in users.

That’s not too surprising due to departures or pull-backs in the space last year by big names like NetEase (Nasdaq: NTES) and Tencent (HKEx: 700), though it certainly doesn’t bode too well for sector giant Sina Weibo (Nasdaq: WB). Another relative loser was online video, which posted only tiny growth last year as the sector came under regulatory assault aimed at reining in companies like Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU) and Baidu’s (Nasdaq: BIDU) iQiyi. WEIBO TALK: TCL’s Valuation Envy, JD Looks Back At Dangdang

Valuations in focus as Lunar year closes

Internet executives were busy quashing a number of rumors on their microblogs this week, with smartphone sensation Xiaomi trying to stamp out reports of bitter relations with SNS giant Facebook (Nasdaq: FB), and e-commerce giant Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) quashing talk of a major new investment in South Korea. But some of the more interesting chatter focused on the concept of company valuations, and just how widely such valuations can vary for China’s dynamic tech firms.

At the same time, a coming flurry of year-end parties began to kick off in the run-up to the Chinese New Year holiday that’s just a month away. The microblogging realm saw e-commerce giant JD.com (Nasdaq: JD) singing its own praises at the company’s annual party, taking a shot at fast-fading rival Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) in the process. At around the same time, a stumbling Sina Weibo (Nasdaq: WB) also held an annual awards ceremony for notable microbloggers, in its own attempt to remain relevant in the social networking realm. INTERNET: Momo, Today’s Headlines Shine On Top Apps List

Bottom line: A new list of China’s top apps spotlights fast-growing names like news app Today’s Headlines, photo app Meitu and dictionary app Youdao, which could raise hundreds of millions of dollars in new funds this year.

Meitu earns place on top 10 app list

A newly released list of China’s top 10 apps for 2014 is shining a spotlight on an up-and-coming field of lesser known names that could be companies to watch, as many are much younger than stalwarts like Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) and Tencent (HKEx: 700). The “BAT” trio of China’s biggest Internet firms took 4 of the top 10 spots on the list, which was compiled by Baidu. But far more interesting were some of the other names, including recently listed social networking app Momo (Nasdaq: MOMO) and news app Today’s Headlines, which made its own headlines with its meteoric rise last year. INTERNET: WeChat Brings Tencent Credit, Lawsuit

Bottom line: Tencent’s inclusion in a national credit database initiative reflects the big commercial potential of WeChat, but a lawsuit over rumor spreading also highlights one of WeChat’s biggest liabilities.

Tencent joins credit card database drive

Two stories in the news are showing how WeChat is likely to become the future big bread-winner for Internet giant Tencent (HKEx: 700), even as the wildly popular mobile messaging service poses tricky liability risks for its parent. The first headlines spotlights WeChat’s huge potential, with reports that the central bank has invited Tencent to take part in development of a new national credit database. The latter news isn’t quite so upbeat, with a Shenzhen-listed drugmaker suing Tencent for failing to stop the spread of rumors about its products over WeChat. Read Full Post…

CONSUMER: Haier, Midea Crank Up Smart Device Dance

Bottom line: Chinese appliance makers and Internet companies need to focus their smart device efforts on one or two key alliances each, or risk spreading their resources too thin.

Haier in new tie-up with Evergrande

Smart devices look set to become a theme of the New Year, with new reports that domestic appliance giants Haier (HKEx: 1169) and Midea (Shenzhen: 000333) have formed major new tie-ups to develop the space. Similar alliances began accelerating in the second half of last year and are aimed at developing the “Internet of Things”, which envisions an interconnected world where devices and their owners can talk to each other at any time over a wide range of wired and wireless networks. IPOs: Linekong Flat In Banner Year Where Firsts Win Big

Bottom line: New IPOs by Chinese tech firms will slow sharply next year, with profitable, sector-leading companies the most likely to make successful offerings.

Linekong finishes flat in banner year for IPOs

On this final day of 2014, I thought I’d take a look at the scorecard for high-tech IPOs this year, including how they’ve performed since their debuts and what we might expect for next year. It seems fitting to start the discussion with the final high-tech IPO of the year, which came with a flat trading debut on Tuesday for mobile gaming company Linekong (HKEx: 8267). That may sound bad, but it’s actually quite good for gaming stocks that have become investor pariahs over the last 2 years. Read Full Post…

WEIBO: Lenovo, TCL Chiefs On The Road; Xiaomi’s Misfit

Lenovo’s Yang, TCL’s Li on year-end global tours

This week’s microblogging round-up continues a recent trend that’s seen China’s high-tech executives keep relatively quiet in cyberspace as they wrap up various year-end business and prepare for the long holiday period between western and Chinese new years. During this busy period there’s less time for chatter, and executives often take to the road for one last trip before a needed year-end rest.

Two of China’s most recognized tech chiefs, Lenovo (HKEx: 992) CEO Yang Yuanqing and TCL (Shenzhen: 000100) Chairman Li Dongsheng, both detailed year-end road trips on their microblogs this past week, providing some insight to the daily routines that these executives go through during the course of the year. INTERNET – Losses Disappoint At Sina, Youku

Bottom line: Shares of Sina and Youku Tudou will continue to be laggards due to their cloudy outlooks, and Youku Tudou could face even greater pressure if it doesn’t sell itself to a larger buyer like Alibaba.

Sina’s Q3 results fail to excite

Today marks the high point of the third-quarter earnings season for Internet companies, with leading web portal Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) and top online video site Youku Tudou (NYSE: YOKU) posting results that didn’t impress investors too much. Both companies reported operating losses for the quarter, even though each managed to pare those losses from previous periods. But the bottom line for Sina was anemic growth in its core advertising revenue, while Youku Tudou’s biggest trouble sign came from ballooning costs. Youku Tudou isn’t being helped either by an ongoing government crackdown against online video operators. Read Full Post…

INTERNET – Weibo Blinks As NetEase Shutters Microblog

Bottom line: NetEase’s withdrawal from microblogging represents a broader decline for the overall sector, and is likely to put downward pressure on Weibo shares over the medium to longer term.

NetEase microblog withdrawal looks bad for Weibo

Media reports that web stalwart NetEase (Nasdaq: NTES) will finally shutter its microblogging service don’t come as a big surprise, since it’s been years since anyone has posed a challenge to the dominance of sector leader Weibo (Nasdaq: WB). But what does come as a slight surprise was the reaction to the news in Weibo’s share price. One would normally expect Weibo shares to rally on news of a competitor’s demise, but instead Weibo’s shares actually fell nearly 4 percent in the latest trading session. Read Full Post…
