INTERNET: China Internet Tycoons Creep Up On Li Ka-shing

Bottom line: China’s “Big 3” Internet tycoons are likely to see their fortunes continue to grow at rates far faster than the broader economy over the next year, and they could even overtake some wealthier real estate magnates.

Jack Ma named China’s richest Internet tycoon

Hong Kong’s Li Ka-shing may still lead the list of wealthiest men in China and Hong Kong, but his traditional formula for success is rapidly losing ground to China’s fast-rising Internet magnates. The heads of China’s “Big 3” Internet firms were all among the top 10 people on this year’s just-published Forbes list of the wealthiest men in China and Hong Kong, spotlighting the huge role that the Internet is playing in China’s economy. Whereas Li’s fortune took decades to build, the founders of Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), Tencent (HKEx: 700) and Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) made their fortunes much more quickly, mostly over the last decade. WEIBO – Web Debut For Lenovo’s Yang; Xiaomi Touts Sina Steal

Lenovo’s Yang launches microblog

Lenovo’s (HKEx: 992) talkative CEO Yang Yuanqing was headline news in the microblogging realm over the past week, as the chatty executive formally launched his own account on Sina Weibo and proceeded to bombard the airwaves with a steady series of thoughts on a wide range of topics. Yang is already quite talkative in general, granting numerous media interviews and giving his thoughts on just about anything to anyone who will listen. So this kind of move isn’t really that surprising, and I expect we’ll hear lots from him in the months and years ahead.

Meantime, executives from the equally talkative Xiaomi were also full of microblogging chatter, touting their latest steal of a high-profile executive from another tech firm. In this case they were congratulating themselves for hiring Chen Tong, one of the earliest top employees at web stalwart Sina (Nasdaq: SINA). A final footnote in this week’s microblogging roundup also saw a teasing tweet from the missing CEO of online video site LeTV (Shenzhen: 300104), amid recent speculation that he may have left China to avoid criminal prosecution. CELLPHONES – Xiaomi On Steroids With New Funding, Tie-Ups

Bottom line: Xiaomi’s new $1.5 billion funding is smaller than expected but gives it a strong valuation, as its small investments in Youku Tudou and iQiyi look like a smart way to quickly build up its product ecosystem.

Xiaomi gets rich valuation from new funding

There’s no shortage of news this week on hyperactive smartphone sensation Xiaomi, which is showing up at least 3 major headlines as it lands major new funding and explores potential tie-ups with China’s top 2 online video sites as well as faded smartphone pioneer BlackBerry (Toronto: BB). I almost have to catch my breath after writing all of that, as any one of these 3 stories would normally qualify as major news. The fact that all 3 are coming at the same time testifies to Xiaomi’s ability to do big deals, and its charismatic CEO Lei Jun may soon take the title for China’s most hyperactive tech leader from the current holder of that title, Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) founder Jack Ma. Weibo: Smog Worries Execs, Qihoo Admits Defeat To Tencent

58.com’s Duan Dong spotlights smoggy Beijing Marathon

Beijing’s notorious smog was thick in the blogosphere this past week, with tech executives sending out a flurry of cautionary messages as the city held its annual marathon. This particular issue shines an important spotlight on the fact that many of China’s top tech firms are clustered in the Chinese capital, running the range from search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) to top portal Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) and PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992).

Meantime, other interesting buzz in the blogosphere was coming from security software specialist Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU), which finally admitted defeat in its anti-monopoly lawsuit against Tencent (HKEx: 700) after the case was denied a final appeal by China’s highest court. One final interesting tidbit came from several executives at Lenovo, which unleashed a flurry of buzz after the company’s announcement of vague plans to set up a separate unit dedicated to smart devices. Weibo: Xiaomi Hit By Apple’s Ive, Lifted By Qihoo’s Zhou

Xiaomi stung by Apple criticism

Publicity savvy smartphone maker Xiaomi was making awkward noises in the blogosphere this past week, as it found itself stinging from critical remarks made by a top executive at Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), the company’s role model. At the same time, the company got an unexpected show of support from another source, as controversial Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) CEO Zhou Hongyi defended the smartphone maker over a different brouhaha involving involving an embarrassing data security investigation in Taiwan.

In separate news, TV giant TCL (Shenzhen: 000100) Chairman Li Dongsheng was talking up a potential electronic payments alliance, with word that his company is discussing a tie-up with UnionPay, operator of China’s leading electronic transactions network. Just last week I commended Li for taking some new risks a decade after 2 disastrous partnerships with European companies. But this latest chatter is starting to get a bit worrisome, as Li seems to be thinking in quite a few directions that are increasingly scattered and lack any common theme.  Read Full Post…

Xiaomi On Track To Pass Gree, Invests In GPS

Xiaomi’s Lei on track to win bet with Gree

Fast-rising smartphone maker Xiaomi is back in the headlines with an update on a high-profile bet made last year by chief Lei Jun, who predicted his company would surpass the older and much larger appliance giant Gree (Shenzhen: 000651) in the next 5 years. At the same time, Lei has also updated a previous pledge that his company won’t go public during that time, which probably reflects the fact that Xiaomi will probably be losing money for much of the next 5 years. Lastly a separate news bit has Xiaomi investing in a GPS technology company, in a further indication that the company intends to follow a path similar to role model Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) in its future development. China Rich List Hints At Tech Bubble

Alibaba’s Jack Ma tops new rich list

The headlines are buzzing today about the latest Hurun Report listing the richest people in China, which has a decidedly tech flavor this year that hints at trouble ahead for the overcharged Internet sector. The report has become a gold standard for gauging the latest business trends in China, but is also famous for focusing on industries that have become overheated. That’s not too surprising, since it’s often such overheating that leads to huge surges in company share prices, which are most often the main foundation for calculating individuals’ wealth. This year half of the top 10 richest men in China come from the tech sector. Read Full Post…

Xiaomi Shoots For Middle In Late 4G Arrival

Xiaomi hypes style with Mi 4

After an embarrassing recent gaffe that saw him ridiculed by fellow smartphone executives, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun was back in the spotlight this week with the launch of his company’s fourth-generation phone aimed at mid-end users. The company managed to get the usual widespread media coverage for the launch of its Mi 4, which it hopes will give it a sales boost necessary to meet an aggressive growth target for this year. But that said, I do sense that media and consumers are starting to tire of the company’s relentless hype and marketing. That could ultimately hurt its growth prospects, especially as China’s mid-range smartphone market becomes flooded with similar products from other domestic manufacturers. Read Full Post…

Weibo: Xiaomi’s Gaffe, Baidu’s Crawl To Brazil

Lei Jun in online gaffe over Xiaomi 4

Smartphone maker Xiaomi’s co-founder Lei Jun is a marketing master, but his lightweight status as a technology expert landed him in the middle of an embarrassing gaffe in the microblogging realm over the past week. I normally would sympathize with someone caught up in such a gaffe, as such mistakes are usually harmless even if they’re somewhat embarrassing. But in this case I don’t feel too much sympathy for Lei, who is such a tireless promoter for his company that this kind of stumble was almost inevitable.

Meantime, the number “2” seems to be a magic one for leading search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), which made a rare appearance in the microblogging realm to trumpet the formal launch of its new search service in Brazil — its second major foray outside China after a dismal first effort in Japan. In this case, Baidu isn’t really trumpeting the “2” element of its Brazilian story, even though it took more than 2 years for the launch since reports first emerged of its plans for the site. Vancl Cuts More, IPO In Sight?

Vancl sells delivery unit

Former online clothing high-flyer Vancl is making yet more cuts to its business, as it pursues its dream of finding sustainable profits and making an eventual public listing. Both goals could come sooner rather than later, especially since IPOs by Chinese web firms have suddenly become an investor favorite again on Wall Street, as reflected by new data on the second-quarter IPO market. Such an offering could be compelling if Vancl really has become profitable, since it’s a clear leader in the highly competitive but still somewhat niche area of clothing e-commerce. Read Full Post…
