INTERNET: Yahoo-Alibaba Dance Set For New Phase?

Bottom line: Alibaba could make a bid to buy Yahoo as part of a broader overhaul of the relationship between these 2 Internet companies, but personal and other issues could ultimately hamper such a deal.

Yahoo to sell remaining Alibaba stake?

Media have been focused these last 2 days on reports of a new mega purchase by Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) in the insurance space, but another report centers on a far more intriguing possible deal involving the e-commerce giant’s long relationship with faded US search giant Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO). That particular relationship has undergone huge changes since the pair first formed their partnership a decade ago, and could easily be the subject of a book. In the latest chapter to that story, a new report is speculating that Alibaba could make a bid for Yahoo in the next year as it seeks to go global following its blockbuster IPO in 2014. INTERNET: Alibaba’s Ma, JD’s Liu Need Higher Standards

Bottom line: Unbecoming behavior by people like Alibaba’s Jack Ma and JD.com’s Richard Liu reflect poorly on China’s corporate sector, and reflects a lack of professional standards.

Alibaba’s Ma, JD’s Liu on bad behavior

Alibaba’s (NYSE: BABA) charismatic founder Jack Ma is known for speaking his mind, but he was on the defensive last week after inflammatory remarks he made about rival JD.com (Nasdaq: JD) were published in a book. JD.com graciously accepted Ma’s rare apology for the remarks, even as its founder Richard Liu was also in the Internet gossip columns for his own controversial behavior related to a rumored break-up with his longtime young girlfriend. ENTERTAINMENT: Wanda Eyes Hollywood Studio, HK IPO Stumbles

Bottom line: Wanda chief Wang Jianlin could purchase a controlling stake in MGM as he looks to take over a Hollywood studio, while his Wanda Dalian property IPO will get a tepid reception but perform well over the longer term.

Wanda’s Wang Jianlin eyes Lions Gate, MGM

Property magnate Wang Jianlin is used to getting what he wants, but 2 new headlines indicate his Wanda Group may have to settle for compromise in a pair of its latest forays, one involving a Hong Kong IPO and the other involving his desire to purchase a major Hollywood studio. The former headline has Wang reportedly scaling back plans for a mega IPO in Hong Kong for Dalian Wanda, his group’s flagship property arm. The second and more intriguing news item has him seeking to buy a controlling stake in a major Hollywood studio, with Lions Gate (NYSE: LGF) and MGM mentioned as 2 possible candidates. IPOs: eHi Sputters; Huayi, iQiyi Raise Funds

Bottom line: A weak debut for eHi reflects waning investor enthusiasm for Chinese IPOs, while a new $585 million investment in Huayi Bros reflects strong growth prospects for the independent filmmaker.

eHi IPO sputters out of the gate

A flurry of fund-raising events are in the headlines today, led by a weak trading debut for car rental specialist eHi Car Services (NYSE: EHIC) and a big capital infusion for Huayi Bros (Shenzhen: 300027), one of China’s leading independent film makers. Rounding out the activity are reports confirming that smartphone high-flyer Xiaomi has made its largest investment to date, spending $300 million for a stake in iQiyi, China’s second largest online video site owned by Internet search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU). INTERNET – Alibaba Singles Day Sales Soar, Stock Pulls Back

Bottom line: Alibaba will to focus on globalization to maintain momentum for its overvalued stock, but the shares are likely to pull back in the first half of next year due to overvaluation.

Alibaba sales jump on Double Eleven

This year’s November 11 shopping day belonged to e-commerce leader Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), even though I’m just slightly reluctant to write too much about this overhyped company. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some of the impressive numbers that Alibaba logged during this year’s Double-Eleven Singles Day event, led by its headline total sales of 57.1 billion yuan ($9.3 billion), up 63 percent from last year. The market didn’t seem too impressed with the growth, with Alibaba’s shares tumbling 3.9 percent in the US trading day after the end of the Chinese shopping binge. Read Full Post…

Alibaba’s Ma Eyes New Partner In Apple’s Cook

Alibaba, Apple weigh electronic wallet tie-up

The headlines are buzzing today with news about newly listed Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), led by word that the e-commerce giant may explore an electronic payments tie-up with global gadget leader Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). I’ll be quite frank and say that such a tie-up would seem destined for disaster, based on the previous experience between Alibaba and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO), its only other major partner in a similar past tie-up.

Meantime, Alibaba has also announced a spin-off of its fledgling online travel business, posing the interesting possibility of some major acquisitions as it tries to quickly expand the unit and also presenting a challenge to sector leaders Ctrip (Nasdaq: CTRP) and Qunar (Nasdaq: QUNR). Lastly there’s the largely technical news bit that Alibaba’s stock broke through the $100 mark for the first time in the latest trading session, putting it nearly 50 percent above its IPO price, as investors eagerly await the company’s maiden earnings report set for next Tuesday. Alibaba Eyes Hollywood: Investment Coming?

Alibaba’s Jack Ma heads for Hollywood

New reports are saying that Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) CEO Jack Ma, flush with cash just weeks after his company’s blockbuster New York IPO, is headed to  Hollywood to talk deals with the industry’s top players. The reports focus mostly on the potential for new content-purchasing deals, as Alibaba looks for a spot in China’s booming market for movies and online video. But what caught my attention was a brief mention in the reports that Ma may be looking for something bigger on his trip, namely a stake in a major or mid-sized Hollywood studio. Read Full Post…

Weibo: Alibaba IPO, iPhone 6 Draw Praise, Comparisons

Techies toast Alibaba IPO success

Two major news events were at the center of the microblogging realm this past week, as tech executives from across the spectrum commented on the blockbuster IPO for Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) and the debut of latest iPhone from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Executives were generally full of praise for the Alibaba IPO, which shattered numerous records when the stock began trading last Friday in New York. But there were also some hints of jealousy, as top executives from fast-fading e-commerce rival Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) and security software maker Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) suffered from valuation envy.

Meantime, domestic smartphone makers Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063) took advantage of the iPhone’s formal launch last Friday to tout their own products, which are far cheaper and enjoy a reputation for reasonable quality. But unlike the iPhone, Huawei and ZTE still suffer from the “Made in China” stigma, and don’t command anything near the level of respect and buzz that the iPhone gets. Read Full Post…

China Rich List Hints At Tech Bubble

Alibaba’s Jack Ma tops new rich list

The headlines are buzzing today about the latest Hurun Report listing the richest people in China, which has a decidedly tech flavor this year that hints at trouble ahead for the overcharged Internet sector. The report has become a gold standard for gauging the latest business trends in China, but is also famous for focusing on industries that have become overheated. That’s not too surprising, since it’s often such overheating that leads to huge surges in company share prices, which are most often the main foundation for calculating individuals’ wealth. This year half of the top 10 richest men in China come from the tech sector. Read Full Post…
