Alibaba’s Ma Tops Rich List As Profits Leap

Jack Ma takes over title as China’s richest man

We’ll have to wait a few weeks to see who wins the title for China’s most valuable Internet company, but the champion for wealthiest chief executive has just been declared with Alibaba founder Jack Ma beating out Tencent (HKEx: 700) chief Pony Ma for the title. That declaration, based on estimates by Bloomberg, comes after release of the latest public filing from Alibaba in the run-up to its highly anticipated IPO that could come in less than 3 weeks. That filing also showed that profits from China’s leading e-commerce company rose 60 percent in the second quarter, an impressive feat for a company of its size. Read Full Post…

Alibaba’s Soccer Buy: Business Ma’s Way

Alibaba joins with Evergrande in soccer buy

E-commerce leader Alibaba has long insisted on a shareholding structure that would put all decision making powers in its top managers, and now we’re getting a taste of what that could mean with word that the company will buy a stake in one of China’s best known soccer teams. On the surface at least, this deal doesn’t look very attractive. Most or all of China’s soccer clubs are losing money, and the league has a record for poor marketing and also a series of corruption scandals that have hurt its reputation. Any ordinary Alibaba shareholder would probably instantly veto such a purchase if he had that kind of voting power. Read Full Post…

Web Pioneers Should Consider Retirement

China Internet titans should consider stepping down

Web portal Sohu.com (Nasdaq: SOHU) was in the headlines last week as founder and longtime chief executive Charles Zhang discussed a major restructuring for one of China’s oldest Internet companies to ensure its long-term survival. (Chinese article) His disclosure put Sohu alongside most of China’s other major Internet companies in announcing such plans, as each seeks to chart a new course in a rapidly changing environment. Weibo: Xiaomi Kills Tie-Up Talk, ZTE Charms First Lady

It should come as no surprise to anyone that top officials at smartphone sensation Xiaomi are once again busy buzzing on their microblogs, since online hype has become a staple of this fast-growing company. But I was somewhat surprised that co-founder Lei Jun took time out from his usual hype to shoot down rumors of tie-ups with 2 of China’s leading Internet companies, hinting at his own big ambitions to soon take a spot alongside the “Big 3” of Alibaba, Tencent (HKEx: 700) and Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU). Meantime, ZTE’s (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063) plans to position its nubia brand of smartphones as a higher end product got a nice boost from China’s first lady Peng Liyuan, who made a point of being seen using one of the models during her husband’s trip to Europe. Alibaba’s Yu’ebao Branded Vampire

CCTV takes aim at Alibaba’s Yu’ebao

Alibaba’s colorful and sometimes controversial founder Jack Ma has been called many things in the past, but even he must be surprised and somewhat alarmed at the latest monicker of “vampire” given to him by an influential commentator at CCTV, China’s leading broadcaster. I don’t usually take sides in this kind of politically sensitive debate, though in this case I really do think that CCTV’s claim is largely unjustified. I suspect the attack, which Alibaba is correctly taking quite seriously, was prompted at least partly at the urging of big state-run lenders that are unhappy about the meteoric rise of Alibaba’s Yu’ebao service, which competes with traditional savings accounts. Xiaomi’s Lei In High-Tech Bet With Gree’s Dong

Xiaomi’s Lei bets with Gree’s Dong

I’ll end the week with a lighter look at an emerging trend in the China corporate world, which has seen some of the nation’s biggest tech personalities make high-profile bets with their equally successful peers from more traditional sectors. The latest in these high-tech wagers has seen Lei Jun, the charismatic founder of fast-growing smartphone maker Xiaomi, make a bet with Dong Mingzhu, often considered China’s most successful business woman as the chairman of appliance giant Gree (Shenzhen: 000651). These bets are mostly for entertainment and publicity on the one hand; but they do also represent the very real challenge that traditional industries are feeling from e-commerce and other emerging high-tech business models. Weibo: Tencent’s Pony Gets Promotional, Alibaba Spins Cameron

Alibaba’s Jack Ma meets British PM Cameron

Spin doctors from Chinese tech titans Tencent (HKEx: 700) and Alibaba have been hard at work these last few days, doing their best to promote their products and add positive interpretations to news involving their companies. Tencent chief Pony Ma was actively hyping up several of his company’s products and services, while an Alibaba executive was touting a visit between founder Jack Ma and visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron. Tencent also got a helping hand from restaurant ratings giant Dianping, whose low-key founder was hyping a new tie-up between Dianping and the payments platform on Tencent’s wildly popular WeChat instant messaging service. Weibo: Tencent’s Pony Ma Finds New Public Face

Tencent’s Pony Ma takes to China Internet stage

Tencent (HKEx: 700) founder Pony Ma is suddenly shedding his low-key style with a flurry of public appearances and speeches, which have been the talk of the microblogging world over the past week. I’ve admired Pony for quite a while now, as he’s quietly built up Tencent into one of the world’s biggest Internet companies with his strong product development skills and early bet on social networking services (SNS). But public speaking has never been a strong suit for this Internet visionary who is one of China’s richest men, which is evident in his mundane series of appearances and mostly mundane comments over the last week.
