IPOs: Uxin Files in NY, Battery Maker in China, Mindray on ChiNext

Bottom line: New listing plans by used car platform operator Uxin, EV battery maker Amperex and medical device maker Mindray should all do well, driven by strong growth potential and their leading positions in China.

Bumper crop of new China IPOs headed to market

The latest IPO season for Chinese firms is kicking into high gear on both sides of the Pacific, with announcement of several hot new offerings that each has a slightly different story to tell. At the head of the class is a new listing for used car platform operator Uxin, which is aiming to raise up to $500 million in New York.

That’s followed by a listing plan for electric vehicle battery maker Amperex, which is having to settle for a sharply-lower valuation than it had been originally seeking with a listing in China. Last but not least there’s medical device maker Mindray, which de-listed from New York and has just submitted a plan to list on China’s enterprise-style ChiNext board, after its initial plan to re-list on one of China’s larger main boards was rejected. INTERNET: Didi Chuxing Drives Into Bikes, Brazil

Bottom line: Didi’s Brazilian acquisition looks relatively shrewd and could be followed by more such moves in developing markets, while its purchase of a local bike-sharing firm looks less prudent.

Didi drives into Brazil

China’s homegrown Uber is in a couple of headlines as we round out the first week of the new year,  reflecting its global aspirations and also its desire to expand beyond its original car-based services at home. The first headline has Didi Chuxing making its first major overseas acquisition in Brazil, while the second has it buying what is probably China’s largest shared bike operator behind the leading pair of Mobike and Ofo.

Each of these headlines is interesting though not earth shattering, and in my view probably reflect the fact that Didi has too much cash more than anything else. This is a classic problem for this kind of superstar Chinese startup, which often runs into the unusual problem of raising more cash than it really needs simply because so many investors want to buy in. At the same time, Didi’s own car services business has probably shrunk over the last year, following a clampdown by many major cities and also as the novelty factor wears off for many consumers. NEW ENERGY: Tesla Takes Its Time With China Plant

Bottom line: Tesla’s announcement that its China plant is three years away puts a clear and realistic timeline on its intentions, which include strong growth in the market banking on supportive policies by Beijing.

Tesla gets realistic about China car production

Anyone who was hoping that electric car superstar Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) would start cranking out its products in China anytime soon will have to think again. Founder and celebrity CEO Elon Musk has poured cold water on all the speculation about his company imminently building a China manufacturing base by saying local production is at least 3 years off. That’s just a single data point, but it’s quite a significant one considering all the talk that’s been swirling around these days.

That talk dates back a couple of years, when reports first emerged that Tesla  was interested in such a move. One of the stumbling blocks all along has been the ownership issue, since China now limits foreign ownership of any car-making joint venture to 50 percent. But that looks set to change, which had fueled speculation that Tesla would step on the gas pedal once it got the green light, pardon all the car metaphors. Read Full Post…

INTERNET: Shared Rides See Merger, Fund Raising, Shutdown

Bottom line: A merged company combining Youon and Haluo could emerge as a strong regional shared bike company, while Shouqi could likewise emerge as a strong regional player in the private car services space.

Shouqi raises new money

China’s shared ride space has been on a turbulent ride of its own this past year, as billions of investor dollars flooded into a sector with big but also limited potential. The result has been the typical bloody battle for market share, which is starting to result in a trickle of mergers, closures and even one new fund-raising in the latest headlines.

In the merger column, a couple of second-tier shared bike operators, one named Youon and the other named Haluo, are formally getting together, perhaps presaging more mergers ahead. The second development has seen Shouqi, a private car services company operated by one of Beijing’s top taxi companies, raise a fresh 600 million yuan ($91 million) in cash. And the third is seeing a shared car company called EZZY formally throw in the towel, leaving its users little hope of recovering their 2,000 yuan deposits. Read Full Post…

IPOs: Wanda Sags, Inches Into Australia; Linekong Lines Up

Bottom line: Shares of BAIC and Dalian Wanda will be flat over the next few months after weak trading debuts, while Linekong shares will open down 5-10 percent if they debut before year-end.

Dalian Wanda dips in IPO

The year-end flurry of IPOs happening in Hong Kong is sputtering, with the 2 biggest offerings by shopping mall operator Dalian Wanda (HKEx: 3699) and car maker BAIC Motor (HKEx: 1958) both making weak trading debuts. That doesn’t bode too well for one of the year’s final remaining IPOs for Linekong, since other companies from the highly competitive video gaming sector haven’t done very well in their similar recent listings in Hong Kong. Alibaba, CAR Soar In NY, HK Trading Debuts

China Auto IPO draws on Alibaba fever with strong debut

I’m a bit reluctant to write more today about the historic New York IPO for e-commerce giant Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), whose extremely strong trading debut surprised even me. But I would be somewhat remiss if I didn’t at least mention the final phase of this massive offering, which has made Alibaba the world’s second largest Internet company behind only Google (Nasdaq: GOOG). At the same time, another far more low profile trading debut in Hong Kong for auto rental specialist CAR Inc (HKEx: 699) has also done quite well, extending a nearly yearlong window for overseas listings by Chinese firms. Xunlei, China Auto File For IPOs in US, HK

China Auto files for HK listing

New York is firmly establishing a reputation as the preferred listing venue for China Internet IPOs, while Hong Kong is developing a taste for auto-related listings. That’s my quick assessment following reports that online video sharing site Xunlei has just joined a long queue of Chinese Internet firms filing to list in New York. At nearly the same time, car rental company China Auto Rental has filed to list in Hong Kong, reversing course from a previous plan to offer shares in New York. Read Full Post…

Dongfeng Nears Dubious Peugeout Deal

Dongfeng in final talks for Peugeot investment

Despite all my warnings, car maker Dongfeng (HKEx: 489) is moving ahead with a plan to invest in struggling French rival Peugeot (Paris: PEUP) as part of a drive to reduce dependence on its current Japanese partners. Dongfeng’s newest tie-up will cement a growing alliance with the French, since this new investment would come just months after Dongfeng inked a separate joint venture deal with that country’s Reneault (Paris: RENA) after more than a year of talks. While France and Japan are completely different animals, each will pose significant challenges for Dongfeng, which is quickly emerging as China’s least politically savvy car maker in its choice of foreign partners. Daimler Ties With BAIC, As Car Ad Sales Zoom

Ad spending by car makers zooms

China’s restless car market is showing signs of new stress, with automakers revving up spending at the nation’s top advertising auction this year as competition heats up and growth slows. Meantime, German car maker Daimler-Benz (Frankfrut: DAIGn) has already moved into the slow lane in recent years due to poor execution, but hopes to turn things around with a new ground-breaking tie-up with its main China partner, Beijing-based BAIC Motor. Ford Comments Signal Accelerating Price Pressure 福特暗示中国车市价格压力加剧

The first quiet signs have emerged that a price war is building in China’s chilly auto market, with Ford (NYSE: F) disclosing that it’s coming under pricing pressure as sales slow under economic cooling measures from Beijing. (English article) The comments from Ford’s Asia chief at a recent US event were very low key, only saying the company has seen pricing pressure in the last 3-4 months. He didn’t give any numbers, but I’ve been  in the news business long enough to know that executives don’t usually make this kind of comment unless they want to brace investors for disappointment or worse. After more than a year of blistering growth of 50 percent or more, fueled in large part by incentives from Beijing, China’s auto market has slowed considerably in the last few months to low single-digit growth and even contraction. Unit auto sales were up an anemic 2 percent in July (English article), but that number says nothing about prices, which I suspect are down 5-10 percent from the previous year as many larger cities limit new buying to ease congestion. The pressure is likely to intensify in the coming year, as billions of dollars in spending on new capacity announced during the boom period start to come online. Smart players like General Motors (NYSE: GM) are bracing themselves for the coming China winter by exporting their China models and designs to other emerging markets and by developing new brands aimed at smaller cities where the slowdown won’t be as big. GM officially launched its made-in-China Baojun brand just last week (English article), and said earlier this week it will use made-in-China kits to build a locally developed minivan in India. (English article) But while GM and its China partner, SAIC (Shanghai: 600104) have the resources to make such protective moves, other domestic players like BYD (HKEx: 1211) and Geely (HKEx: 165) look much more vulnerable, and are likely to see their profits drop sharply in the months ahead or even sink into the loss column.

Bottom line: Ford’s recent comments indicate prices are dropping in China’s overheated car market, with the pressure likely to continue for at least the next year.
