It seems that all the goodwill in China garnered by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook wasn’t enough to prevent the company from hitting a major new roadblock, with word that its book and movie services have been blocked in the country. The move nicely illustrates 2 faces of Beijing that sometimes seem contradictory. On the one hand, Chinese leaders crave the attention they get when global leaders like Cook visit China and pay due respect to the market. But on the other, they have little tolerance for anyone who violates the country’s strict censorship rules.

Buzz is now centering on whether Apple will be able to somehow bring its book and movie services into compliance with new Chinese rules rolled out last month, allowing the services to resume. If this were Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) running into similar problems, I would say the answer would be “no”, since the company has little goodwill with Beijing. But Apple has invested heavily to win the favor of Beijing leaders, meaning it’s likely to get a more sympathetic ear, probably after personal intervention by Cook himself. Read Full Post…

IPOs: China Wealth Fund Backs Yum, ZTE Eyes Nubia Spin-Off

Bottom line: Yum may sell control of its China unit to Chinese partners in a bid to become more local, while ZTE’s plans for a Nubia IPO reflect a growing emphasis on its younger, trendier smartphone brand.

A couple of big IPO stories are rippling through the headlines, led by word that an investor group headed by China’s sovereign wealth fund could buy control of the China unit of Yum Brands (NYSE: YUM), owner of the KFC fast-food chain, as it gets set for a spin-off and separate listing. This particular news marks a shift from previous reports that implied Yum would retain control of its China unit, even as it sold a major stake to big institutional investors.

While the Yum listing is likely to come later this year, another smaller but interesting deal has telecoms giant ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 00063) saying it plans to spin off and separately list its smartphone division that manufactures under the Nubia brand in the next 3 years. That hints that ZTE may be re-thinking its smartphone business, and perhaps preparing to slowly de-emphasize its older ZTE-branded phones in favor of its younger, higher-end Nubia line. RETAIL: Britain’s Asos Crushed by China E-Commerce

Bottom line: Asos’ China retreat is due to the country’s extremely competitive e-commerce landscape, and shows that western retailers need to devote significant resources to succeed in the market.

In what looks like a first for a major western retailer, British fashion seller Asos (London: ASC) has officially pulled the plug on its China operations. Some might say that’s nothing new, since much bigger names like supermarket operator Tesco (London: TSCO) and electronics seller Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) have made similar moves in the last 5 years after failing to find a big enough audience among Chinese consumers.

But Asos is a different case, since it’s one of a growing number of western retailers that are choosing to come to China as a pure e-commerce plays, in a bid to save the huge costs involved with traditional stores and also take advantage of the nation’s online shopping craze. INTERNET: Google Serenades Beijing With Entrepreneur Event

Bottom line: Google’s event to promote entrepreneurs in China is its latest effort to curry favor with Beijing, and could help it win permission to open a local version of its Google Play app store by year-end.

Internet giant Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is quickly joining Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) as one of China’s biggest fans, as it looks to re-enter the world’s largest online market with a launch of its app store and possibly its Nexus smartphones. Less than a month after its AlphaGo computer wowed Chinese audiences by beating a world champion at the ancient board game of Go, Google’s China chief has just wrapped up a major local event aimed at helping the country’s legions of budding entrepreneurs.

Anyhow who lives in China knows that words like “entrepreneur” and “creativity” have become buzzwords from Beijing and local governments, which are desperately trying to boost the private sector to offset numerous problems in the big state-run establishment. The hyperactive Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) is in yet another major headline today, forming a tie-up to co-produce 2 of the most successful movie franchises from Hollywood giant Paramount. But what’s most intriguing about this latest deal is the timing, since it comes just over a month after Paramount announced it may be preparing to sell a stake of itself to a Chinese buyer.

Paramount announced that intent in late February, as part of a broader move by Hollywood to cash in on China’s booming box office that is the world’s second largest behind only the US. RETAIL: McDonald’s Finds China Partner in China Resources

Bottom line: McDonald’s plan to sell its wholly owned China stores to China Resources looks like a smart move that should help it achieve its aggressive new expansion plans in the market and broadly benefit both sides.

Leading consumer conglomerate China Resources looks like a company with an identity crisis these days, with word that it’s bidding to buy the China store operations of global fast food giant McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD). Such a deal would be huge, since China is now home to more than 2,200 McDonald’s, and the US company recently announced plans to open another 1,000 restaurants in the market over the next 5 years.

It’s important to note that many of McDonald’s existing China restaurants are run by local franchising partners, and that a potential sale of its China stores to China Resources wouldn’t affect those outlets. McDonald’s uses a similar franchising model throughout most of the rest of the world. It originally owned and operated most of its China restaurants when it entered the country in the 1990s due to the newness of the market and lack of suitable partners. In a move that smells of desperation, struggling smartphone maker Lenovo (HEx: 992) has decided to tweak its Motorola brand name whose sales have tanked since being acquired by the Chinese company in 2014. The move will see Lenovo retire the formal Motorola name and simply refer to the brand by its shorter and trendier Moto moniker. More precisely, the brand will become known as Moto by Lenovo.

This particular move isn’t so significant from a financial perspective, since Lenovo isn’t ready yet to ditch the iconic but faded US brand it acquired for nearly $3 billion in 2014. After being rebuffed several times in the US and Taiwan, China’s ambitious Tsinghua Unigroup is back in the chip acquisition headlines with word that it’s exploring a possible purchase of smaller US chip designer Lattice Semiconductor (Nasdaq: LSCC). Unlike the earlier failed deals that were either outright acquisitions or purchases of major stakes worth billions of dollars, this latest deal is quite small both in dollar terms and stake size.

That would seem to indicate that Unigroup and its affiliated sister companies, all housed at the prestigious Tsinghua University, are shifting to a more cautious approach targeting smaller companies in their global M&A strategy. LEISURE: Jin Jiang Eyes Bigger Influence in Uneasy Accor Alliance

Bottom line: Jin Jiang is likely to ultimately drop its pursuit of Accor and sell its entire stake in the French hotelier, which is showing signs of growing uneasiness in an unwanted courtship by its Chinese suitor.

Leading Chinese hotelier Jin Jiang (HKEx: 2006; Shanghai: 600754) and worldwide peer Accor (Paris: AC) are becoming increasingly uncomfortable bed mates, with word that the former may want to boost its stake in the latter. This particular alliance was engineered by the state-run Jin Jiang, which early this year acquired 5.5 percent of Accor by purchasing shares of the French hotel operator in the open market. Jin Jiang later upped that stake to nearly 12 percent, though again it’s not clear if it bought the shares with the approval of Accor, operator of the upscale Novotel and Sofitel brands.

The history of this relationship, combined with overtones in the latest reports, all hint at an uneasy courtship that is taking place between these 2 companies. Jin Jiang is clearly interested in Accor’s global background and expertise, as it embarks on a recent buying spree in an attempt to build China’s first worldwide hotel company. Bottom line: China’s latest plan to buy Finnish chip maker Okmetic could get vetoed on national security concerns, reflecting foreign government concerns about selling technology companies to government-backed entities.

China’s ambitions of building a world-class high-tech microchip industry were in the headlines again last week, when the small Finnish chip maker Okmetic (Helsinki: OKM1V) revealed it had received a takeover bid from a government-backed company based in Shanghai. Beijing’s ambitions are understandable, since China currently buys over 60 percent of the world’s microchips to feed its vast manufacturing complex that makes everything from smartphones to computers and home appliances.

But recent resistance in the US and Taiwan has also highlighted reluctance by overseas governments to seeing their companies purchased by the big state-run vehicles that Beijing has recently set up to achieve its aims. Historically speaking, China has also achieved mixed results when the government backs big microchip projects, which often fall victim to government agendas that limit their ability to quickly respond to the fast-changing market. MEDIA: China’s XIO Group Revs Up Bidding for Up JD Power

Bottom line: A surprise bid by China’s XIO Group for JD Power is unlikely to succeed due to lack of experience and possible concerns over a regulatory veto, but could force rival bidders to raise their offers slightly.

In what’s becoming an increasingly common occurrence, an obscure Chinese company has entered the bidding for a major western asset, with word that a buyout firm called XIO Group is eyeing US-based car industry consulting giant JD Power and Associates. I’m not too surprised by any of these bids these days, since many Chinese companies are flush with cash and under orders from Beijing to diversify beyond their home market.

These bids are pushing up the prices for global assets quite a bit, even as many such acquisition attempts ultimately fail. Both of those elements are present in this latest story, since Chinese bidders have become famous for attempting to buy top names like JD Power at any price, regardless of fundamentals of the acquisition target.
