Tencent In M&A Overdrive With New Tie-Ups

Tencent eyes non-web firms in tie-up frenzy

I’ve become a big fan lately of top Internet company Tencent (HKEx: 700), which has taken a more focused, measured approach to M&A in a recent string of major acquisitions and tie-ups by China’s top 3 web firms. But the company seems to be rapidly moving into M&A overdrive, following word of 3 major new deals this week alone, none of which looks too exciting or focused. Whereas nearly all of Tencent’s tie-ups to date have been with other online firms, the trio of rumored new deals all involve major players from traditional industries that have little or no experience on the Internet. Imax Finds Potent Local Partners, Eyes China IPO

Imax ties up with new Chinese investors

Big-screen theater technology company Imax (NYSE: IMAX) is in the headlines today for a savvy move that will make it look more Chinese as it attempts to grab a major slice of the nation’s booming film market. The newly announced deal has Canada-based Imax selling 20 percent of its China unit to 2 local partners, including one with strong ties in China’s commercial capital of Shanghai. Equally interesting, Imax is saying it aims to list its China unit on one of China’s stock exchanges in the next 5 years, in what would become a rare instance of a domestic IPO by a majority foreign-owned company. Huayi Bros Jumps On Hollywood Bandwagon

Huayi goes to Hollywood

The list of major Chinese entertainment firms jumping on the Hollywood bandwagon has just gained an important new member with word that Huayi Bros (Shenzhen: 300027) is on the cusp of investing in a major new production house. I’ve been following the China media scene for more than a decade now, and can say that Huayi was one of the nation’s earliest major players to emerge in a space that was extremely difficult for years due to tough restrictions and extreme fragmentation. But Huayi has shown not only an ability to survive, but also to thrive in a market where the movie theater business is suddenly booming and online video has quickly become an important new revenue source. E-Commerce Seduces Wanda, Trade Zone Woos Walmart

Wanda to enter e-commerce with Alibaba

It seems appropriate that I’m writing this post on my computer while sitting in a coffee shop at a Wanda Plaza shopping center in Shanghai, since new reports say the Wanda real estate group owned by one of China’s richest men is planning a big new move into the booming e-commerce sector. Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin will certainly have plenty of competition if he makes such a move, including from an increasingly aggressive Walmart (NYSE: WMT), whose China-based Yihaodian site is reportedly getting set to move into a ground-breaking new free-trade zone (FTZ) in Shanghai.  Read Full Post…

East-West Lines Blur At China Box Office

Domestic films zoom at China’s box office

Two interesting new reports about China’s box office paint very different pictures about the country’s movie industry. Everyone agrees the sector is growing at a rapid clip, and will probably eclipse the US over the next decade to become the world’s largest box office. But who exactly is fueling that growth is a subject of debate, with one report saying domestic productions are suddenly surging as another says Chinese film companies are boosting their appetite for foreign productions. The underlying factor behind this apparent paradox is a growing confluence between East and West, with foreign studios increasingly working with Chinese partners and customizing their films for Chinese audiences. Wanda Global Binge Likely To Target Real Estate

Wanda gears up for global M&A binge

Media have been buzzing about possible acquisition targets by Wanda Group, a top Chinese real estate firm, after the company’s talkative founder Wang Jianlin disclosed he has a massive warchest for global purchases. Some have speculated the new buying binge could focus on hotels or other service-oriented businesses, following Wanda’s big recent moves into the hospitality business and its landmark purchase last year of AMC Entertainment, the second largest US movie theater operator. But I would bet my money on real estate, as that’s what Wang knows best and it’s an area where Chinese firms in general have shown a strong interest in buying overseas assets. Read Full Post…

Hollywood Vision Drives DreamWorks, Wanda’s Wang

Oriental DreamWorks boosts China plans

DreamWorks Animation (NYSE: DWA) is dropping the “animation” part of its name in its year-old China joint venture, with word of a major new expansion that underscores the Chinese film market’s growing clout. Word of the expansion comes as Wang Jianlin, China’s newly named richest man, also makes a big bet on Hollywood, with his multiple investments in movie theaters and related technology via has Wanda Group empire. DreamWorks and Wang are both chasing a Chinese film market that is growing at breakneck pack, and is now the world’s second largest after only the US. DreamWorks is also setting its sights on China’s rapidly transforming TV market, where the Internet and other new delivery channels look set to shake up the traditionally slow-moving sector. Wanda To List AMC Amid Sputtering IPOs

Wanda aims to list AMC

In a somewhat ironic development, the latest application for a New York IPO by a Chinese firm is coming from one of the biggest US theater chains, AMC Entertainment, which was purchased by Chinese real estate giant Wanda Group last year for $2.6 billion. I’m calling the move ironic because most China watchers have been waiting for more than a year for the resumption of IPOs by Chinese firms in New York, following a 2 year winter that saw only a handful of companies list due to frigid investor sentiment. This latest development by Wanda and AMC may show that it’s still too early to say the recent IPO winter has finally ended, since AMC is really a US-based asset despite its Chinese ownership. Digital Domain’s New HK Owner, Wanda’s Imax Affair

Digital Domain gets new owner, Wanda expands Imax ties

A couple of news bits are highlighting China’s rapidly blossoming love affair with Hollywood, and also hinting at the turbulence we’re likely to see in the next couple of years as Chinese firms invest too much as they become smitten with show business. One of those deals has US digital effects house Digital Domain being taken over by a new Chinese owner less than a year after it was purchased out of bankruptcy by a Beijing-based film producer. The other has leading theater chain owner Wanda Group significantly boosting its ties with Canada’s Imax (Toronto: IMX), as it invests heavily in Imax’s big-screen technology. Read Full Post…
