INTERNET: Tencent, Alibaba Odd In-Laws Again in O2O Mega-Merger

Update: An official at an investment firm involved in the deal confirmed to YCBB that the merger talks are happening.

Bottom line: The merger of Dinaping an Meituan will make uneasy in-laws of Tencent and Alibaba, and will likely be followed within a year by a buyout by one of the partners or IPO for the new company.

Meituan, Dianping in uneasy union

The headlines are buzzing today with word of an imminent merger between leading group buying sites Dianping and Meituan on this first day back to work after the week-long National Day holiday. The deal is certainly a landmark one, as it will create a clear leader in the emerging category of online-to-offline (O2O) companies that bring together the convenience of Internet buying with offline products and services like restaurant dining, going to the movies and hailing a taxi.

Some media are pointing out the merger will pose a major new challenge to the aggressive O2O aspirations of Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), which is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into building out its own rival services. But for me, this particular marriage represents the latest chapter of an increasingly close but also uncomfortable alliance between the country’s other 2 Internet giants, Tencent (HKEx: 700) and Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), which are major stakeholders in Dianping and Meituan, respectively. INTERNET: Didi Kuaidi a Paper Tiger with US Lyft Deal

Bottom line: Didi Kuaidi’s Lyft investment looks smart but will disappoint those hoping for a more aggressive move into the US, while a new taxi app backed by 2 Beijing fleet operators is unlikely to pose a major challenge to private rivals.

Didi Kuaidi drives into US with Lyft investment

Anyone with big hopes for Chinese hired car services leader Didi Kuaidi following its latest mega fund-raising will be disappointed to hear the company’s highly anticipated move to the US is coming through a minor investment that’s unlikely to yield much results. Many were hoping for bigger things from this aggressive Chinese company, but instead Didi Kuaidi looks set to enter the US through an investment and strategic tie-up with local partner Lyft, a rival of the more high-profile and very aggressive Uber.

My view that many will be disappointed by this move is sincere, but at the same time I would also add that Didi Kuaid’s decision to avoid the US for now looks quite shrewd. History has shown that Chinese start-ups have far better prospects when they make developing markets the first stop on their global expansion road maps, rather than focusing on western markets that are lucrative but also far more competitive. INTERNET: Uber, Didi Kuaidi on Cusp of Legal Status

Bottom line: Beijing should be commended for taking a national approach to regulating private hired car services, and should continue to update its policies to reflect the rapidly changing sector.

Beijing welcomes Uber, Didi to compete with taxis

A rambunctious young group of Internet companies could soon receive legal status in China, with reports that Beijing is getting set to unveil new rules governing private hired car services as early as this week. Beijing should be praised for taking an even-handed approach and regulating these services that are creating unprecedented competition for taxis, rather than bowing to pressure from state-owned taxi companies that want the aggressive group of newcomers banned.

These newer services do need to be regulated to avoid crime and fraud that has plagued industry pioneer Uber and similar services in other parts of the world. But to outlaw such services, like some countries have done, would have cost China an opportunity to nurture a whole new industry, including the homegrown Didi Kuaidi that was valued at $16.5 billion after a recent funding. FUND RAISING: Alibaba, Uber, Didi Kuaidi In Mega Fundings

Bottom line: Major new funding raising by Uber, its Chinese equivalent, and Alibaba’s logistics arm reflect continued interest in such leading Internet firms by major global Investors, though funding will slow sharply for smaller, less known players.

Three new Internet deals raise $5 bln

It seems my earlier forecast was incorrect that major fund-raising for Chinese Internet companies could be cooling due to waning investor sentiment during the recent market volatility. The latest headlines include 3 major new deal close to completion, worth a collective $5 billion. The largest has Didi Kuaidi, the homegrown Chinese equivalent of private car services giant Uber, on the cusp of new a funding deal worth $3 billion. The second has the actual Uber also near a deal to raise $1.2 billion for its Chinese business, as it prepares to spin off the unit into a separate company.

Meantime, the smallest of the deals has e-commerce leader Alibaba ‘s(NYSE: BABA) Cainiao logistics unit also on the verge of a deal to provide hundreds of millions of yuan for a small logistics company. In this case the move appears aimed at helping Cainiao to build up its stable of partners providing logistics service. The addition of such outsiders would also help to validate Alibaba’s 2-year-old program to plow 100 billion yuan into its logistics capabilities.

FUND RAISING: Citic Funds Uber, Lufax Eyes IPO

Bottom line: New fund-raising signals indicate car services giant Uber could spin off its China unit within a year, and that Ping An-backed P2P lending platform Lufax could make a major IPO in the same time frame.

Uber, Lufax send new fund-raising signals

Two big new fund-raising stories are in the headlines, led by a modest new funding commitment that hints at a spin-off soon for the China unit of hired car services leader Uber. Meantime, the rush to see which of China’s fast-growing peer-to-peer (P2P) lending sites will be first to market has officially begun, with separate reports saying an IPO is in the planning stages for Lufax, a Shanghai based company that is backed by one of China’s top traditional financial services firms.

Both of these deals are in the mid-range in terms of size, probably worth the $100-$500 million, contrasting with a spate of deals earlier this year that were worth much more when China’s stock market was booming. It’s still possible we could see one or two more mega-fundings worth $1 billion or more by the end of the year, though such large deals could quickly disappear if China’s stock markets and economy remain in the doldrums. RETAIL: KFC Gets New China Head, Investors Eye Spin-Off

Bottom line: Yum’s new leadership change marks the start of a new period of sustained same-store sales growth for KFC  in China, which could include a spin-off of the company’s China business over the next 2 years.

Yum names new China head

Market wisdom often says that China is too big to ignore for most multinationals, despite the market’s complexities and many restrictions. Now a new trend is emerging that says China is too big and complex to be run as part of a company’s bigger global operations, and needs to be split off into a separate unit for major global firms.

That’s the interpretation some are making following Yum Brands’ (NYSE: YUM) naming of a new China chief, and growing speculation that the parent of the KFC and Pizza Hut chains will spin off its China business into a separate company. In this case, Yum’s naming of Micky Pant as CEO of Yum Brands China comes as KFC is in the midst of a major overhaul for its largest market outside the US. Read Full Post…
