Xiaomi Eyes Finance, Phoenix Tries News Feeds

Xiaomi invests in Jimu Box

A couple of smaller deals are in the headlines today, with smartphone sensation Xiaomi dipping its toe into the financial services market and online news portal Phoenix New Media (NYSE: FENG) eying the news feed business. Both deals are relatively small in terms of size, but each provides some interesting insight on the thinking at these 2 different companies in the tech and new media space. The first deal has Xiaomi joining a group of investors betting on a peer-to-peer (P2P) online lending platform called Jimu Box. The second has Phoenix investing in Particle Inc, maker of an app that lets users design personalized feeds to receive news over their mobile phones. Read Full Post…

Online Ad Market Peaks As Qihoo Threat Looms

Phoenix stock jumps on ad gains

We’re getting a better picture of the latest online advertising trends with the recent release of earnings from 3 leading web portals, revealing a looming slowdown for names like Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) and Phoenix New Media (NYSE: FENG). Sina and Sohu could offset the slowdown through growth in their newer businesses, which includes Sina’s Weibo microblogging service and Sohu’s search and video services. But everyone could also face more challenges from newcomers like Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU), which is under intense pressure to start monetizing its highly-hyped and fast growing So.com search service. Bears Chase Baidu After So-So Earnings

Bears chase Baidu

Internet search leader Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) can’t seem to do anything right these days, even when it posts quarterly earnings results that look relatively respectable to me. I suspect that the same short-term traders who bid up Baidu’s stock to meteoric heights in the years after its 2005 IPO are now trying to make more money by short selling the company. That’s my best explanation for the 8 percent sell-off in Baidu stock in after-hours trade after it posted its latest quarterly earnings report. If the losses carry into the regular Friday session, Baidu could easily see its market capitalization drop below the $30 billion mark as its stock tests new lows not seen for more than 3 years. Renren Buy-Back: Does Anyone Care? 人人回购股票:有人关心吗?

Beleaguered social networking site (SNS) Renren (NYSE: RENN) is resorting to the feeble tactic of buying back its shares to boost its anemic stock, even as it faces little or no prospect of major new growth in the current chilly advertising climate. What the company really needs right now is a major jolt to excite investors, perhaps through a privatization or a mega-merger with leading rival Kaixin. Both of those could be possibilities in the new year, with the merger option as the most exciting that could breathe new life into a company that was once considered the Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) of China.

Phoenix New Media Clips VP 凤凰新媒体执行副总裁离职

Web portal Phoenix New Media (NYSE: FENG) appears to be going through a behind-the-scenes reshuffle, with word that a top executive has left the company as it continues to struggle with fallout from a national advertising slowdown. It’s hard to know what exactly is going on behind the scenes at Phoenix, which once wowed investors with triple-digit gains in its core advertising business following its 2011 IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. But its most recent financial reports have clearly shown the company is having a much harder time than many of its larger peers in coping with China’s recent advertising slowdown, which I suspect is a major reason for the newly announced resignation of vice president Wang Yulin.
