Canada Delays CNOOC-Nexen Decision 加拿大推延中海油收购尼克森决议

An increasingly xenophobic West will face an important test in the next 30 days as Canada weighs whether to approve the $15 billion purchase of local oil exploration giant Nexen (Toronto: NXY) by Chinese rival CNOOC (HKEx: 883; NYSE: CEO). The deal could well become an important indicator of the West’s willingness to accept China as an equal partner in the global economy, and its approval would send a positive signal after a more controversial decision last week that saw two of China’s leading technology firms locked out of the US telecoms equipment market due to security concerns.

CNOOC’s Nexen Bid Clears One Hurdle, Faces Another 尼克森股东批准中海油收购 公众反对声音或加大

Oil exploration giant CNOOC’s (HKEx: 883) record-breaking bid for Canadian rival Nexen (Toronto: NXY) has cleared one hurdle with the Thursday approval of the deal by Nexen shareholders, even as a much bigger obstacle looms in the realm of public opinion where opposition appears to be building. Public opinion could be a major factor that ultimately decides the fate of this deal, which still needs  approval from a Canadian administration that has said it will consider national sentiment before making its final decision.

CNOOC’s Nexen Bid: Where’s the Noise? 中海油收购尼克森:争议在哪?

I have to admit that I’ve been quite surprised by the lack of noise coming from North American  politicians in the month since Chinese oil major CNOOC (HKEx: 883; NYSE: CEO) announced its landmark plan to buy Canadian oil giant Nexen (Toronto: NXY) in a deal valued at $15.1 billion. In fact, you could say the silence over that period has been almost deafening, with the lack of noise only ending late last week when Nexen made the low-key announcement that it has scheduled a meeting on September 20 for its shareholders to vote on the deal. Resource Buying Binge Hits Speed Bump 中国海外资源收购面临减速

A plan by aluminum giant Chalco (HKEx: 2600; Shanghai: 601600) to buy a Mongolian-focused mining company is reportedly on the verge of collapse due to politics, a development that could have big implications for China’s recent buying spree for global resource assets. For anyone who hasn’t been paying close attention, Chinese energy and resource firms, from oil and coal giants to gold and iron ore miners, have embarked on a multibillion-dollar spending spree over the last few years to feed the country’s growing economy. The buying binge has gained momentum in the last year, as cash-rich Chinese companies, with strong support from Beijing, have purchased assets from cash-challenged international owners still struggling as a result of the global economic downturn. Now, at least one country that has become a favorite destination for Chinese buying, Mongolia, appears to finally be saying “no”.
