New 4G Contracts Test Beijing’s Fair Trade Commitment

US, Europe test China’s fair trade commitment

The coming months will be a pivotal time for Beijing to show its commitment to free trade, as China’s three telcoms operators get set to award billions of dollars in new contracts to build 4G mobile networks. The building spree will mark the first batch of big new contracts since both the US and Europe took moves last year that could severely limit or ban the import of Chinese networking equipment for reasons of national security and unfair competition.

China Mobile Scraps Taiwan Tie-Up

China Mobile scraps Far EasTone tie-up

My first reaction to reading the news that mobile carrier China Mobile (HKEx: 941) had formally scrapped a 4-year-old plan to buy a stake in Taiwanese peer Far EasTone (Taipei: 4904) was: What took them so long? In fact, I wasn’t even aware that China Mobile still even considered this tie-up alive, as the deal attracted controversy from the moment the 2 sides announced it in 2009. This formal scrapping of the deal does seem to represent a milestone of sorts, as it shows that we won’t see any M&A in the sensitive telecoms sectors across the Taiwan Strait anytime soon despite ever warming ties between China and Taiwan. Australia Takes Middle Road With Huawei

Australia welcomes Huawei

New signals from embattled telecoms equipment giant Huawei indicate the company may be seeking a new “middle road”, as it tries to ease western concerns that its products could be used for spying by Beijing. This subtle but perhaps significant shift is coming in the form of a press release just issued by Huawei, in which it says Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard encouraged the Chinese company to expand its commercial business in Australia during a trip to China this week. Huawei, ZTE Banned From Selling to US Govt

Washington puts more bans on Huawei, ZTE

The ongoing tiff between the US and China over the security of Chinese telecoms equipment took a new twist last week when Washington largely forbid several government agencies from buying products from industry giants Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063). While Washington’s previous moves in the dispute have been controversial and often contrary to fair trade principles, this latest act looks more reasonable because it is limited to purchasing by a small number of government agencies. China’s Smartphone Crown: Who Cares? 看待中国称冠智能手机市场不要太认真

I’m feeling a bit cranky and contrarian today, so I’m going to be somewhat bold and give the following response to yet the latest headlines trumpeting China’s passing the US to become the world’s largest smartphone market: Who cares? I’ll admit that my response to this development is perhaps a bit unfair, since China’s attainment of the world’s smartphone title is certainly an important milestone for a country where even traditional wired telephone service was still rare as recently as 20 years ago.

US Sanctions Spotlight China Expansion Risk 美国制裁突显中国扩张风险

New US sanctions against a handful of Chinese companies accused of illegally selling goods to Iran, North Korea or Syria are once again casting a spotlight on the risk investors and businesses face when dealing with Chinese companies, especially sellers of high-tech equipment and services. In this particular case most of the sanctioned companies appear to have ties to China’s military and are all privately held. But other high-profile cases in the past year have pointed to similar potentially illegal behavior by telecoms equipment giants Huawei and ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063), which are suspected of selling or trying to sell goods to Iran, possibly in violation of US or UN sanctions.
