LEISURE: Fosun’s Guo Courts Beijing with Sports Investment

Bottom line: Billionaire Guo Guangchang’s new sporting venture reflects his desire to move into entertainment, and also to win goodwill by supporting Beijing’s initiative to build up Chinese athletics.

Fosun’s Guo in sports tie-up with Europe’s GestiFute

After his brief and somewhat ominous disappearance last month, the man once called China’s Warren Buffett is back in the headlines, with word that Guo Guangchang has joined the growing ranks of Chinese billionaires making major investments in sports. In this case Guo is teaming up with Portuguese “super broker” GestiFute, whose main business is engineering the deals that allow European players to move from one soccer club to another. Among its deals, GestiFute was involved in previous transfers involving superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, showing the company is itself a major player in the business.

This particular deal is just the latest by some of China’s richest men and biggest private companies, which have suddenly discovered a huge appetite for all things sports. That filing also showed that profits from China’s leading e-commerce company rose 60 percent in the second quarter, an impressive feat for a company of its size. Read Full Post…

Alibaba continues hyping Laiwang

The microblog realm has been buzzing loudly this final week of 2013 with stories that are likely to be major themes in the new year, led by a probable IPO by Jingdong, China’s second largest e-commerce firm. Meantime, e-commerce leader Alibaba was showing no signs of slowing down the endless promotion of its recently launched mobile instant messaging (IM) service Laiwang, as it tries to catch up with Tencent’s (HKEx: 700) hugely popular WeChat rival service. Lastly, tweets coming from top e-commerce firms Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) and Suning (Shenzhen: 002024) hint that 2014 could see the start of consolidation in the booming but also fiercely competitive parcel delivery sector, perhaps including a few major acquisitions and closures and a long-awaited domestic IPO for China Postal Express, the parcel delivery unit of China’s Post Office. Xiaomi’s Lei bets with Gree’s Dong

I’ll end the week with a lighter look at an emerging trend in the China corporate world, which has seen some of the nation’s biggest tech personalities make high-profile bets with their equally successful peers from more traditional sectors. The latest in these high-tech wagers has seen Lei Jun, the charismatic founder of fast-growing smartphone maker Xiaomi, make a bet with Dong Mingzhu, often considered China’s most successful business woman as the chairman of appliance giant Gree (Shenzhen: 000651). These bets are mostly for entertainment and publicity on the one hand; but they do also represent the very real challenge that traditional industries are feeling from e-commerce and other emerging high-tech business models.
