Fosun latest Business & Financial news from Doug Young, the Expert on Chinese High Tech Market, (former Journalist and Chief editor at Reuters) Fosun is Chinese company.
An exciting trend is building momentum on China’s private equity scene, with a new generation of more entrepreneurial firms taking shape to compete on the global stage with traditional giants like Carlyle (Nasdaq: CG), KKR and TPG. One of the most active of those firms is the privately owned Fosun, which has become a regular headline maker due to its recent string of global acquisitions. Now the company is in the news once more, with word that it may soon become one of only a handful of companies in China to get a license to operate a private bank. In other private equity news, the highly anticipated launch of a major new player with strong ties to Shanghai’s financial community has finally come with the formal debut of China Minsheng Investment Corp (CMIC). Gas stations were never that attractive to me as an investment, but a group of major firms seem to think differently as oil refining giant Sinopec (HKEx: 386; Shanghai: 600028) gets set to sell up to 30 percent of its retail arm. That’s my conclusion, following reports that domestic investment giant Fosun (HKEx: 656) and Internet leader Tencent (HKEx: 700), and Canadian retailer Alimentation Couche-Tard (Toronto: ATDb) are among the finalists bidding for a stake in the Sinopec unit. In separate headlines, the acquisitive Fosun is also reportedly in talks for another mega deal that would see it purchase the US unit of global insurance giant Swiss Re (Switzerland: SREX). More than half a year after putting itself up for sale, US publishing giant Forbes Media has found a suitor in a group with strong China ties even though none of its members are actually Chinese. The announcement comes as a slight surprise because Fosun International (HKEx: 656), one of China’s biggest private equity firms, had been rumored as a frontrunner in the bidding for the US publishing giant. Some media are saying that price was the determining factor in the end, as Fosun may have been unwilling to pay the high premium that Forbes wanted. But the stigma of potential ownership by a Chinese company may have also influenced the final decision by Forbes, which wants to maintain its independent image while also staying active in the China market. Technology giant Legend Holdings has grabbed headlines in recent days with news of a record investment by its private equity arm in a leading British pizza chain, its first major overseas foray. The deal saw Legend’s Hony Capital agree to pay $1.6 billion for the PizzaExpress chain, as part of a growing trend by Chinese firms to invest in the overseas food and retail sectors.
The purchase comes as Legend gears up for an IPO as early as later this year, offering investors a chance to buy into a diversified group whose biggest asset is its controlling stake in PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992). But the bigger headline in the Legend story is reports that the company is strongly considering staging its listing in Hong Kong rather than its native China. Read Full Post…
A day after I wrote about a conflict that threatened to delay the premier of the new “Transformers” movie in China, media are reporting the commercial dispute in the matter has been resolved. Meantime, leading Chinese private equity investor Fosun International (HKEx: 656) is also catching the Hollywood fever that has been infecting Chinese media companies lately, announcing a major new investment in a start-up production house led by a former Warner Bros (NYSE: TWX) chief. Both of these stories show that the through train connecting China and Hollywood continues to gain momentum, and even Beijing is getting on board to help solve business disputes that could otherwise cost millions of dollars in lost sales. Just weeks after a group of seasoned managers launched a major new fund in Shanghai, word is out that another top money manager is preparing to launch yet another fund aimed at selling China companies to global investors. The man behind the latest fund-raising drive is Yu Bin, a former director from China Investment Corp (CIC), China’s sovereign wealth fund. Yu is part of a new generation of market-savvy Chinese fund managers to emerge over the last decade, often after returning from the west where they received both education and experience working for major global fund houses and investment banks. Investors may be giving a cold shoulder to many new Chinese companies lining up to list overseas, but one name that’s not having any such troubles is Citic Group, one of China’s oldest and most entrepreneurial financial services conglomerates. Ironically, Citic isn’t even making a formal IPO as it seeks to list in Hong Kong, but instead is making a massive back-door offering using its Citic Pacific (HKEx: 267) unit as the vehicle. The latest reports say a group of top-tier global and domestic investors are lining up to buy into the new back-door listing, reflecting Citic’s attraction as an alternative for buyers looking to gain exposure to China’s financial services sector.
