Bottom line: Declining Wal-Mart China sales and Suntory’s decision to dissolve a China joint venture reflect difficulties foreign consumer names face in the fast changing market, and also challenges posed by local rivals like Bright Food.

Sales fall 6 pct at Walmart China JV stores

Two new consumer stories are shining a spotlight on the difficulties many big foreign brands are facing in China’s tough retailing market, where they compete with both homegrown giants and also smaller names that can quickly gain scale over the Internet. One story reports on falling sales at US retailing giant Wal-Mart’s (NYSE: WMT) China stores, based on rarely seen data from a local joint venture. The other reports that Japanese brewing giant Suntory (Tokyo: 2587) is putting a lid on its 3-year-old Chinese beer-making joint venture.

Meantime, a third outbound M&A story involving Shanghai-based Bright Food shines a spotlight on one of the rising local giants that is posing a growing challenge to the big western consumer names. That deal has the acquisitive Bright, which has made billion-dollar purchases in Britain and Israel, signing another smaller deal to buy half of a major New Zealand meat processor for $200 million. Bright’s agreement to buy the stake in Silver Fern Farms looks similar to WH Group’s (HKEx: 288) blockbuster deal 2 years ago that saw it purchase leading US pork producer Smithfield for nearly $5 billion. Bottom line: AMD’s sell-down of its China assets, and a record fine against Qualcomm earlier this year reflect China’s fading attraction for global chip makers due to technical and bureaucratic obstacles.

A trio of headlines from the chip-making sector is showing just how much China has lost its luster for big multinationals, as logistical and technological issues dog this once-promising industry. Leading the headlines is word that struggling US chip maker AMD (NYSE: AMD) is selling most of its Asia-based foundry business, including sizable China operations, to a Chinese partner.

That was followed by announcement of a new very domestic chip-making joint venture anchored by SMIC (HKEx: 981), China’s largest contract foundry that at one time had hopes of becoming a global giant. Last but not least is a headline showing that US giant Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) was the main recipient of China’s recent anti-monopoly fervor, paying 90 percent of the penalties meted out by one of the nation’s main anti-trust regulators in 10 cases so far this year. RETAIL: Wal-Mart Dumped by China Partner As Landscape Changes

Bottom line: Wal-Mart’s loss of China Resources as one of its major Chinese partners reflects rapid changes in the traditional retailing market, and could prompt Wal-Mart to accelerate an overhaul of its broader China strategy to focus more on e-commerce.

Just 3 months after sacking the founders of its China e-commerce site, US retailing giant Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has suffered yet another blow in the huge but difficult market with the loss of a major local partner for its traditional brick-and-mortar stores. That move is seeing China Resources, one of the country’s biggest and oldest consumer names, dump shares worth $515 million in a number of Wal-Mart stores that it jointly owns with the US retailing giant.

The move isn’t all that surprising for a number of reasons, but still doesn’t look too good for Wal-Mart in the fast-changing Chinese retailing market. For starters, China Resources is already a major owner of smaller supermarket chain called Vanguard. MULTINATIONALS: Lenovo, Unigroup Eyeing Rival Bids for EMC?

Bottom line: Lenovo and Tsinghua Unigroup may be considering rival bids for EMC following a $67 billion offer from Dell, but will ultimately abandon any such plans due to high price and political sensitivities.

As the blockbuster deal that would see faded PC giant Dell buy leading memory products maker EMC (NYSE: EMC) for $67 billion buzzes through the high-tech headlines, I thought I would look at 2 leading Chinese candidates whose names were noticeably absent on the list of companies that might make rival bids for EMC. China tech watchers will know I’m referring to local PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992), which has never seen an acquisition opportunity it didn’t like, and the more recently acquisitive Tsinghua Unigroup.

Both of these names could be interested in EMC for similar reasons, and each could theoretically make rival bid for the US company. Dell’s newly announced purchase of EMC would be one of the biggest-ever sales in the high-tech world, but also includes a 60 day period where others could make counter offers. Other names mentioned that could make such bids include the likes of IBM (NYSE: IBM), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), though sources say the chances of such a bid are slim. Bottom line: Mark Zuckerberg’s increasingly blatant groveling in his effort to bring Facebook to China could backfire if he’s not careful, and instead he should work behind the scenes and be patient for approval that could come within the next 1-2 years.

There’s still more than 2 months left in the year, but I’m already giving my “China Brown Noser of the Year” award to Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) founder Mark Zuckerberg, who has become quite unabashed about doing anything he can to win favor from Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping was front and center on the Facebook chief’s radar screen during his recent visit to the US, where Zuckerberg managed to attend 2 high profile events where China’s most powerful man was present.

I previously wrote about the first event in Seattle where numerous US tech leaders were also present. (previous post). But it was the latter White House event later in the week that prompted me to give Zuckerberg the dubious honors as China brown noser supreme. Bottom line: The latest global acquisitions by Tsinghua Unigroup and Unisplendour show the company still aims to build a global IT services and hardware giant, which could culminate with a new bid for Micron in 2017.

Unigroup makes major boardroom acquisition

The ambitious Tsinghua Unigroup may have abandoned its controversial bid for leading US memory chip maker Micron (Nasdaq: MU) for now, but the Chinese high-tech wannabe certainly isn’t giving up on its global aspirations. That’s my interpretation of the company’s latest moves, which include its hiring of a Taiwanese executive with ties to Micron, as well as the recent purchase of a major stake in leading US hard drive giant Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) by a sister company.

Unigroup and sister company Unisplendour‘s names have appeared all over the map this past year, as they form a steady string of major equity tie-ups with the likes of leading global chip maker Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and IT services and hardware giant Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ). But the companies’ ambitious plans to create an IT services and hardware megaplex similar to IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) hit a major roadblock over the summer, when Unigroup had to scrap its plans to buy Micron due to potential political opposition in Washington. MULTINATIONALS: New China Board Should Welcome Yum, Uber

Bottom line: China should expand its plans for a new enterprise board in Shanghai to include a place for the Chinese units of big multinationals like Yum and Uber, allowing domestic investors to buy into these big foreign names.

Calls grow for KFC parent to spin off China unit

Global fast food giant Yum Brands (NYSE: YUM) became the latest major multinational to contemplate a spin-off for its China business last week, following in the tracks of Uber and IMAX (NYSE: IMAX), two leaders in their respective areas of hired car services and big-screen theater technology. The trend acknowledges that China will soon become the world’s largest consumer market, and its unique qualities and complexities often justify creation of separate companies for these big global names to effectively develop the market.

China should seize on this trend and modify its current plans for a new Nasdaq-style enterprise board based in Shanghai to also include a place for these larger, newly created companies with foreign roots. Reports earlier this year indicated the regulator was aiming to roll out the new strategic industries board as soon as next year, though its plans could be delayed due to the recent turmoil on China’s stock markets. Beijing in new steps to charge up EV sales

China made the latest new move to boost its sputtering electric vehicle (EV) program over the holiday, disclosing an ambitious plan to sharply accelerate installation of charging stations across the country. The plan was aimed at countering one of the biggest obstacles to EV development, namely concerns from potential owners about difficulties they might face recharging their vehicles.

The new move comes after Beijing announced new financial incentives for EV buyers in May, and could provide some more momentum to a national program that has fallen far short of expectations. SMARTPHONES: Apple Goes to War With China’s Pirates

Bottom line: Apple’s new drive to sell legal music, books and video in China stands a reasonably good chance of success, banking on consumers’ growing willingness to pay for such products if they are convenient and affordably priced.

Following the record-breaking debut for its iPhone 6s models, tech giant Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is taking a big new risk by attempting something no one has done yet successfully: making profits from selling legal music and movies in China. The move was part of a newly announced major expansion of Apple’s online store in its second largest global market. But while Chinese consumers have shown a big willingness to pay huge premiums for iPhones, it’s far from clear they’ll do the same for movies and music that they can usually download for free.

Apple sold a record 13 million iPhone 6s models worldwide in their first weekend on sale, easily beating the previous record of 10 million for the iPhone 6 models. China was an important factor in achieving the new record, since the iPhone 6 wasn’t available here during the first weekend of its global launch due to technical reasons. Apple hasn’t given any individual country figures yet, but it’s probably safe to assume it sold at least 3 million of the new iPhones in China during their opening weekend. Read Full Post…

Despite being blocked in the world’s largest Internet market, social networking (SNS) giant Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) is using every opportunity to quietly remind the world that it’s determined to include China in its global footprint. Just a week after company founder Mark Zuckerberg met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a high-profile event in Seattle, his chief deputy Sheryl Sandberg was quoted at an event in New York talking up the big business Facebook is already doing in China.

Company watchers will know that Facebook quietly opened a China office in Beijing last year, with an aim to courting local advertisers seeking to reach the company’s global audience of 1.5 billion users. That business is doing quite well, according to Sandberg, though the Facebook’s ultimate China goal is still its eventual entry into a domestic Internet market that boasts nearly 700 million web surfers. INTERNET: Microsoft Cozies with Baidu, Bing Set for China Exit?

Bottom line: Microsoft’s new tie-up with Baidu could presage a major scale-back for its China-based Bing search engine, paving the way for Baidu technology to power the struggling service.

An interesting new dance is taking shape between global software titan Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and leading Chinese search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), paving the way for a potential exit of Microsoft’s Bing search engine from China after years of disappointing results. After announcing a new tie-up that will see Baidu promote Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 10 operating system in China, the pair are saying said that Baidu will now become the default search engine on the web browser associated with the newest Windows.

Microsoft will clearly benefit from the first move, which should help it to sell more legal copies of its core Windows OS in China. Baidu is the clear beneficiary from the second move, making this look somewhat like an even trade-off. But while the first move is relatively neutral to Baidu, the second will see Microsoft effectively sacrifice Bing in China.
