After several false alarms, China’s slow-moving telecoms regulator has finally made its highly anticipated award of 4G licenses to the nation’s 2 smaller telcos, providing a much needed boost as they lose share to dominant telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL). Now China Telcom (HKEx: 728; NYSE: CHA) and China Unicom (HKEx: 762; NYSE: CHA) will have to quickly build networks based on 4G FDD-LTE technology, the standard used in most of the rest of the world that will now finally make its debut in China. The 4G strategies of China’s 2 smaller telcos are starting to emerge under an unusual hybrid scheme being rolled out by the nation’s telecoms regulator, and the path being pursued by China Unicom (HKEx: 762; NYSE: CHU) certainly doesn’t look encouraging. Both Unicom and China Telecom (HKEx: 728; NYSE: CHA) have been given the nod to launch commercial 4G service using a homegrown standard known as TD-LTE, even though both plan to build their main networks using a more globally tested technology technology called FDD-LTE. But whereas China Telecom is making minimal investment in TD-LTE, Unicom seems intent on wasting billions of dollars, with word that it has awarded contracts to 8 companies to start construction of a network based on the technology. Let’s end this back-to-work week with a few telecoms news bits, starting with word that leading telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) has wisely decided to abandon a bid for a Pakistani telco. Media are also reporting that China Mobile is edging closer still to a long-awaited deal to offer iPhones on its network, with word of a new key hiring move by Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). Lastly there are reports that China Telecom (HKEx: 728; NYSE: CHA), the smallest of China’s 3 carriers, has selected suppliers for the first phase of construction for its 4G networks, giving most of the business to Chinese firms.
