FUND RAISING: Dianping Inches Towards IPO, 55Tuan Disappears

Bottom line: Dianping’s bigger-than-expected fund-raising underscores its popularity among investors, and could pressure it to make an IPO worth $1 billion or more this year to capitalize on positive market sentiment.

Dianping closes $850 mln funding

China’s online group buying space could be closer to getting its first IPO, with word that Dianping, one of the industry’s 2 leaders, has just raised a whopping $850 million in its fifth funding round. The massive funding has actually been in the works since late last year, but kept growing as more investors clamored for a piece of this hot company. The move sends the latest signal that Dianping may be eying an IPO later this year that could raise up to $1 billion or more.

Word of the funding comes as a more advanced IPO plan has gone missing from smaller rival 55Tuan, which was hoping to become China’s first publicly listed group buying site. 55Tuan made a public filing for a New York IPO back in January, and a later filing indicated it planned to sell its shares and begin trading on February 25. But that date has come and gone with no listing, and there’s still no word on the reason for the delays more than 2 weeks later. Read Full Post…

LaShou Story Ends With Sale To SanPower

LaShou bows with sale to SanPower

The end has finally come for group buying site LaShou, though this former Internet superstar survived for far longer than I ever imagined it would before its newly announced acquisition by conglomerate SanPower Group, which owns a number of online and offline retail brands. Of course this acquisition doesn’t mean the actual death of LaShou, and it’s quite possible the company could still make a comeback under its new ownership. But its acquisition marks one of the final big consolidation moves for a group buying sector that saw explosive growth 3 years ago, followed by a major correction that saw most companies either close or get acquired. Investors Favor Online Travel With Tujia Funding

Tujia lands new mega-funding

Online travel is quickly taking on a new cult-like status among investors, with word of a major new funding for vacation rental site Tujia. This latest fund-raising frenzy in online travel looks very similar to what happened in group buying about 4 years ago, when investors pumped billions of dollars into a wide range of money-losing start-ups. Internet watchers will know that many of those companies later went bust, raising the prospect that a similar fate could be waiting for the online travel sector. Read Full Post…

Meituan Gets New Funds, Eyes IPO

Meituan raises $100 mln

After a 4 year cycle that saw China’s group buying sector first boom and then crash spectacularly, we could finally see an IPO soon from Meituan, which has emerged as the industry’s leader and a true survivor. Media are reporting that Meituan is close to getting $100 million in new funding — an admirable feat in the current climate that has seen investors largely shun the group of former high flyers. That investment would come just weeks after leading Internet firm Tencent (HKEx: 700) purchased 20 percent of Dianping, another strong player that has emerged in the group buying space. Baidu Finishes Nuomi, Tencent Eyes Dianping

Baidu buys Renren’s remaining stake in Nuomi

A couple of Internet M&A deals are in the news as we head into the final days before the Lunar New Year, with word that leading search engine Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) has purchased more of group buying site Nuomi, while top Internet company Tencent (HKEx: 700) may be eying restaurant ratings site Dianping. The first deal could reflect a new pattern for Baidu, which has mostly bought controlling stakes but made few outright acquisitions in its recent spree of major purchases. Meantime, the latter deal would look good for Tencent if it was really happening, though I have major doubts about whether it is. Read Full Post…

Wanzhong Falls As Group Buying Cleanup Nears End

Wanzhong becomes latest group buying victim

Some new figures are showing just how dramatically China’s group buying sector has contracted over the past year, with word that another major player Wanzhong has folded due to lack of funds. Wangzhong’s closure comes as the number of group buying casualties finally starts to slow, simply because so many have now left the space. I do expect we’ll see at least one or two more major closures or mergers this year, and previously predicted that former high-flyer LaShou could be one of those. But that said, the year could also see 2 or 3 major players finally emerge that have the potential to make IPOs and post strong long-term growth, similar to what we’ve seen recently from global sector leader Groupon (Nasdaq: GRPN). 2014 To See Consolidation For Web, Retail

2014 to start fast for business, but end slow

It’s quiet outside as markets reopen on this first work day after the New Year, so I thought I’d start off 2014 with some predictions for the year ahead in the sectors that I cover. Generally speaking, I do think the first half of the year will see a continuation of strong momentum that began in late 2013 for many sectors. But that  momentum will slow as we near the mid-year mark, and 2014 could end with a whimper as the Chinese economy continues to slow and Beijing pushes for higher quality growth. Read Full Post…

Baidu Gets Sticky With Renren, Flirts With Finance,

Baidu gets chummy with Renren

Update: After originally posting this item, a Renren spokesman has gotten in touch to deny there are any talks for asset sales to Baidu beyond the original Nuomi sale.

Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) is the subject of a new flurry of news bits, including growing ties with social networking leader Renren (NYSE: RENN) and a new financial services initiative, spotlighting the sudden urgency it feels to grow beyond its core search business. The Renren news bits are the most interesting to me, because they highlight the importance of social media to the growth strategies of most major Chinese Internet companies and could also presage an eventual acquisition. The financial services initiative also reflects the sudden rush by Chinese web giants into this area, though Baidu looks a bit late in its arrival to the space. Read Full Post…

Lashou Seeks Partner, Focus De-Lists

Focus Media finally de-lists

Today I want to take a look at the latest developments from 2 companies that have both tried to play in the US stock markets, but ultimately found out that international investors can be a fickle group. In both cases, outdoor advertising specialist Focus Media and group buying specialist LaShou discovered that foreign equity markets can be quite lucrative and prestigious, especially for up-and-coming Chinese firms that can make successful IPOs. But both firms have also discovered those same markets can also be brutal places for Chinese companies that aren’t used to dealing with sophisticated institutional investors, hedge funds and short sellers that are active in those markets.
