Bottom line: Lenovo’s ejection from the Hang Seng Index caps its long fall from grace over the last four years, and leaves the company in an increasingly deep hole that may be hard to emerge from.

Capping its long fall from grace, PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992) has been officially booted from the Hang Seng Index, in a move that looks highly symbolic but also has some very real ramifications for this former high-flyer. It’s probably too early to relegate Lenovo to the history books, but we can certainly say the company is down for the count with this latest blow.

As someone who has followed Lenovo for most of its life as a listed company, I can provide my own view that the company is certainly facing a life-or-death moment in its lifetime that dates back more than three decades, making it one of China’s oldest tech names. I have called repeatedly for the departure of CEO Yang Yuanqing and introduction of some newer, younger blood to the company’s top ranks. But it doesn’t seem that Yang’s boss, Lenovo founder Liu Chuanzhi, cares too much what I think, as he has repeatedly stuck with this right-hand man throughout the company’s decline. Read Full Post…

Bottom line: Western Digital’s new China joint venture is unlikely to raise national security objections from Washington, but could add to a looming global semiconductor glut due to an aggressive build-up of the sector by Beijing.

Just a half year after Washington killed its plans for a major investment from China, memory storage giant Western Digital (Nasdaq: WDC) is thumbing its nose at US security regulators by moving ahead with joint venture that was part of the earlier tie-up plan. I’m probably overstating Washington’s objections in this instance, since US officials never formally vetoed a deal that would have seen Western Digital sell 15 percent of itself to China’s Unisplendour for $3.8 billion.

Instead, Washington simply said the deal would require a review for national security risk, refuting Western Digital’s earlier view that the sale shouldn’t require such approval. The threat of a review was enough for both sides to decide to scrap the sale, though their latest announcement shows they are continuing ahead with a joint venture that was part of their broader tie-up plan. Chinese IT services firm Inspur has just scored a major new partnership, with word that it’s forming a new tie-up to offer cloud and other Internet-based services with global telecoms equipment leader Ericsson. (Stockholm: ERICb). The new tie-up adds to a growing stable of similar alliances between Inspur and big-name foreign partners, following previous tie-ups with IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO).

We should begin by pointing out that this kind of tie-up isn’t that uncommon for big foreign high-tech names, since Beijing often prefers that such companies form joint ventures for doing business in the vast Chinese market. That drive for tie-ups has accelerated over the last year, following Beijing’s roll-out of a new national security law that requires foreign high-tech product makers to work with Chinese partners when selling to the government or big state-owned companies. The US builder of the line connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas was quite direct, blaming its decision on Washington’s condition requiring that rail cars for the project be locally manufactured.

Two separate new headlines point to the nascent resistance against the landmark deal announced 2 weeks ago, which would see Chinese home appliance maker Midea (Shenzhen: 000333) acquire 30 percent of Germany’s Kuka (Frankfurt: KU2G) for more than $1 billion. US software giant Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is sending the latest sign that foreign tech firms are bending to Beijing’s national security concerns, with word that it has created a special version of Windows 10 just for the Chinese government. This kind of a move looks relatively bold, and sharply contrasts with Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) recent refusal to assist the US government in its drive to unlock a terrorist’s iPhone.

But Microsoft’s move isn’t completely unprecedented either, since the software giant also made a similar move more than a decade ago when it released the source code for Windows to Beijing. Since then, Microsoft has continued to share its Windows source code with Beijing for newer versions of the operating system, reflecting the importance the company places on the huge China market. TELECOMS: ZTE Hit By US Probe Into Iran Sanctions Violations

Officials at telecoms equipment and smartphone maker ZTE (HKEx: 763; Shenzhen: 000063) got a rough start to the new week, after media reported the company was set to get punished by Washington for selling products to Iran in violation of earlier UN sanctions. The news quickly buzzed through the headlines, and prompted ZTE to request a halt to trading of its Hong Kong-listed shares. (HKEx announcement)

This particular case actually dates back to 2012, when reports emerged that the FBI was investigating ZTE for illegally selling US computer equipment to Iran at the height of tensions with the west related to its nuclear development program. SMARTPHONES: IBM Dumps Sputtering Lenovo

Bottom line: IBM’s sale of its Lenovo shares isn’t surprising since it probably received the stock as part of a recent transaction between the pair, but  still comes as the latest sign of no confidence in the struggling Chinese PC giant.

Things just keep getting worse for struggling PC maker and smartphone wannabe Lenovo (HKEx: 992). Just 2 weeks after new data showed the company’s smartphone sales plunged in its home China market at the end of last year, new reports are saying that US tech giant IBM (NYSE: IBM) is dumping the Lenovo shares that it received as part of a recent transaction between the pair of companies.

The amount of the sale doesn’t look that big, with IBM looking to sell about $150 million worth of Lenovo shares, the reports say. (English article; Chinese article) But it’s important to note those same shares were worth about twice as much in October 2014, which is when IBM probably first received the stock as part of a sale of its low-end server business to Lenovo for $2.1 billion. PCs: All Signals Point Down for Wearying Lenovo

Bottom line: Lenovo chief Yang Yuanqing is likely to resign or get replaced as company head by the end of this year as sales continue to stumble, possibly by recently named President Gianfranco Lanci from its European operations.

Lenovo looks at tough year ahead

If there’s a single word to summarize the latest quarterly results from struggling PC giant Lenovo (HKEx: 992), it’s “down”. Just about every major metric in its just-released results was down, though the company did manage to boost its net profit for the quarter thanks to recent aggressive cost cutting. But lowering costs isn’t a long-term formula for success, and investors are clearly worried about the prospects for Lenovo’s shriveling core PC business and a sputtering mobile device unit that is supposed to be its new growth driver.

Investors were clearly most spooked by Lenovo’s top line revenue, which shrank 8 percent to $12.9 billion in its latest quarter. That was the first time Lenovo has posted such a revenue decline in more than 6 years, and nicely summarizes the company’s struggles in just about all of its major product areas. Lenovo did achieve one notable milestone as its mobile device unit finally climbed from the loss column to break even. But even that is hardly an accomplishment since cost cutting was most likely the main driver behind that movement.  Read Full Post…
