TELECOMS: Unigroup’s Powertech Buy Tests Cross-Strait Tech M&A

Bottom line: Taiwan should quickly approve Tsinghua Unigroup’s plan to buy a quarter of Taiwan’s Powertech for $600 million if it finds no security issues, which could help to accelerate cross-Strait high-tech M&A deals.

Unigroup, Powertech in cross-Strait microchip tie-up

One of the biggest equity tie-ups to date between high-tech companies across the Taiwan Strait was announced late last week, when the acquisitive Tsinghua Unigroup said it planned to buy a quarter of Taiwanese chip company Powertech (Taipei: 6239) for around $600 million. The deal would provide Unigroup with valuable production assets in its drive to build a major new global chip maker, and would give Powertech cash and other resources as it fights for advantage in the highly competitive chip sector.

And yet despite the obvious rationale for such a deal, only a handful of similar tie-ups have occurred to date due to the risks of getting vetoed by Taiwan on national security grounds, since they involve sophisticated technology. Read Full Post…

INTERNET: WeChat Probed, Faces Eviction in Taiwan

Bottom line: A probe against WeChat in Taiwan is likely to see its local offices shut down and Tencent evicted, reflecting the many challenges Chinese tech companies will face as they try to expand abroad.

WeChat faces Taiwan eviction

Taiwan may share many cultural traits with China, but its government certainly doesn’t seem to have much love for Chinese technology. The list of Chinese firms running into trouble on the island has just gained a new member, with word that Tencent’s (HKEx: 700) hugely popular WeChat is facing eviction from Taiwan for possibly violating local investment rules.

This brewing setback is interesting mostly for political reasons, and also because it reflects the troubles that WeChat has faced in its fledgling global expansion. From a practical perspective, Taiwan looks like an easy market for Chinese tech companies due to the shared language and culture. But the fact is that Taiwanese preferences are often quite different from China’s, and in this case the reality is that Japan-leaning Taiwanese far favor rival Japanese product Line to WeChat. FINANCE: ICBC’s Taiwan Buy On Hold, Bright Food Closes Israel Deal

Bottom line: ICBC is likely to ultimately get approval to buy 20 percent of Taiwan’s SinoPac Financial, while Bright Food’s newly closed purchase of Israel’s Tnuva should boost its bid to become China’s first global food group.

Bright Food closes Tnuva buy

I got a sense of deja vu on reading the latest announcement from ICBC (HKEx: 1398), saying China’s leading lender has extended a deadline to buy 20 percent of Taiwan’s SinoPac Financial (Taipei: 2890), 2 years after the tie-up was first disclosed. That’s because this deal looks strikingly similar to another proposed tie-up between leading Chinese telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) and one of its Taiwan peers, which ultimately crumbled after repeated extensions. In both cases political sensitivities undermined the deals, though such sensitives could play less of a role in the ICBC-SinoPac deal.

At the same time, I’ll also admit my surprise to read that another sensitive deal has closed that will see Shanghai-based food giant Bright Food Group buy Tnuva, Israel’s largest dairy. That deal was first announced about a year ago, but concerns were quickly raised that Israel might veto it over national security concerns. But the latest reports say the purchase has finally closed, handing Bright a major victory in its quest to become China’s first global food giant. Read Full Post…

China Mobile Eyes Pakistan Expansion

China Mobile eyes Pakistan’s Warid

It appears that dominant wireless telco China Mobile (HKEx: 941; NYSE: CHL) has discovered a sudden love affair with Pakistan, with word that it’s weighing an acquisition bid to complement its existing operation in the South Asian market. If anyone detects just a tiny bit of sarcasm in my tone, it’s because I find it somewhat amusing that the world’s largest wireless telco is focusing so much energy on such a small market when there are so many more promising ones for its troubled global expansion. China Mobile Scraps Taiwan Tie-Up

China Mobile scraps Far EasTone tie-up

My first reaction to reading the news that mobile carrier China Mobile (HKEx: 941) had formally scrapped a 4-year-old plan to buy a stake in Taiwanese peer Far EasTone (Taipei: 4904) was: What took them so long? In fact, I wasn’t even aware that China Mobile still even considered this tie-up alive, as the deal attracted controversy from the moment the 2 sides announced it in 2009. This formal scrapping of the deal does seem to represent a milestone of sorts, as it shows that we won’t see any M&A in the sensitive telecoms sectors across the Taiwan Strait anytime soon despite ever warming ties between China and Taiwan. Fubon Banks on Cross-Strait Thaw 富邦金控收购华一银行80%股权

The ongoing thaw in relations between China and Taiwan has helped increase trust between the former pair of Cold War adversaries, but hopes for a boom in cross-strait M&A have yet to materialize as lingering suspicions remain. That reality is on display once again this week, with the announcement by Fubon (Taipei: 2881), one of Taiwan’s leading banks, that it has reached an agreement to buy 80 percent of a mid-sized Chinese bank called First Sino Bank for about $900 million.
