iKang Growth Steady, A Long-Term Play

iKang posts solid but unspectacular Q2 results

Let’s take a break from the usual tech and trade war chatter today to look at the healthcare sector, focusing on the newly released maiden results from private clinic operator iKang (Nasdaq: KANG). The results look relatively solid but unspectacular, though that didn’t stop investors from dumping iKang’s shares in after-hours trade after the report came out. Even if that 17 percent sell-off holds in regular trading on Tuesday, iKang’s shares are still up about 40 percent from their IPO price back in April. Read Full Post…

Giant, RDA De-List As Deal-Making Slows

RDK closes privatization

Two more US-traded Chinese firms are on the cusp of de-listing, with online game operator Giant Interactive (NYSE: GA) and chipmaker RDA Microelectronics (NYSE: RDA) just announcing they have wrapped up buy-out deals that will pave the way for their imminent privatization. These 2 de-listing stories were announced months ago and are completely expected. But the bigger underlying story is the lack of major new privatization announcements in the last half year. In a similar development, major new IPOs by Chinese firms in New York have slowed considerably since a boom of offerings in April and May, indicating the broader deal-making market may be entering a new, more stable phase. Bidding War Breaks Out For Chindex

Chindex gets sweetened buyout offer

Many smaller Chinese companies may be getting little or no respect from Wall Street these days, but private equity seems a bit more interested in these undervalued firms. That’s my latest assessment following word that a bidding war has broken out for Chindex (Nasdaq: CNDX), an operator of clinics in China. Chindex said it received a sweetened buyout offer from a managed-led group that first bid for the company in February, after a rival bidder stepped in. This kind of bidding war has been relatively rare in the recent flurry of privatizations by Chinese firms, though this particular case hints that we could see 1 or 2 more similar wars occur as the trend plays out. Chindex Joins Privatization Queue With Fosun Buyout

Fosun Pharma, TPG make offer for Chindex

I’ll start this post with a major disclaimer, since one of my main reasons is simple sentimentality for writing about the newly announced buyout of New York-listed hospital operator Chindex (Nasdaq: CHDX) by a unit of the aggressive Fosun Group.  When I first arrived in Beijing in 1987 as recent college graduate, I worked briefly in Chindex’s Beijing offices, which at the time were in the old Xiyuan hotel near the Beijing zoo. Since then, the company has transformed from its early days as an importer of medical and industrial equipment to its current focus on building and operating hospitals and clinics. Along the way it also made an IPO, and has quietly grown into a company with a market value of nearly $300 million. Read Full Post…
